How ChatGPT and other AI assistants decide who to recommend
When someone asks "what's the best digital marketing agency in Chennai?" or "recommend a dermatologist in Dubai Marina", an AI assistant draws on two sources:
- What it already learned during training — how often and how positively your brand appears across the web.
- What it finds live — many assistants, including ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews, run real-time web searches and summarise the top sources.
Either way, the same signals matter: is your business clearly described, consistently represented, and mentioned by sources the AI considers trustworthy?
9 steps to become the business AI recommends
1. Let AI crawlers in
Check your robots.txt allows search-focused bots such as OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Bingbot and Googlebot. If you use Cloudflare, also check its bot settings — AI crawler blocking can be switched on at the network level even when your robots.txt says "allow".
2. Make your key facts impossible to misunderstand
Your homepage and service pages should state, in plain sentences: what you do, who it's for, where you operate, what it costs (or a starting price), and what makes you different. AI models quote clear, specific statements; vague taglines get ignored.
3. Add structured data
Use schema.org markup for your Organization or LocalBusiness, services, FAQs, articles and reviews. It helps search engines — and the AI systems built on them — connect the facts about your business correctly.
4. Answer the questions buyers actually ask
Build pages around real questions: "How much does X cost in Chennai?", "X vs Y — which is better for…?", "How long does X take?". Lead with a direct answer, then explain. This is the format AI assistants lift into their responses.
5. Be consistent everywhere
Your name, address, phone, services and descriptions should match across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Instagram, directories and marketplaces. Inconsistency makes AI less confident, and less confident systems mention you less.
6. Earn mentions on sites AI trusts
Ask the assistant your buyers' questions and note which websites it cites — industry directories, "best of" lists, news sites, Reddit or Quora threads, YouTube reviews. Those are your PR targets. Being listed, reviewed or quoted there is the closest thing to "link building" for AI.
7. Collect reviews and reply to them
Fresh, detailed reviews on Google and relevant platforms are a strong trust signal for both local search and AI recommendations. Replying shows you're active and gives more context about your services.
8. Keep your SEO strong
Many AI answers are grounded in search results. Pages that rank well on Google and Bing are far more likely to be read and cited. GEO doesn't replace SEO — it builds on it.
9. Measure AI visibility and AI traffic
Create a fixed list of 20–50 buyer prompts and check monthly whether you're mentioned, in what position and how you're described. On your website, tag visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com as an "AI assistants" channel in GA4 so you can see leads and revenue from AI.
Tip: ChatGPT often adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it shows. Make sure your analytics keeps those parameters — they're the easiest way to prove GEO is working.
What about ChatGPT ads?
OpenAI now sells sponsored placements in ChatGPT in a growing list of markets. Ads can get you in front of buyers immediately, while GEO builds organic recommendations over time. The strongest approach uses both: ads for speed and data, GEO for durable, lower-cost visibility.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Blocking AI bots by accident through security or CDN settings.
- Publishing generic AI-written content with no real expertise, data or examples.
- Hiding prices, locations and specifics behind "contact us".
- Expecting guaranteed placements — no one controls AI answers, so be wary of anyone who promises them.

FAQ
Is GEO the same as SEO?
No, but they overlap heavily. SEO aims to rank pages in search results; GEO aims to have your brand named and cited inside AI-generated answers. Strong SEO is the foundation of good GEO.
Does llms.txt help with ChatGPT?
llms.txt is a simple file that summarises your site for AI tools. Adoption by major assistants is still limited, so treat it as a low-effort extra rather than a ranking factor — clear pages, crawl access and third-party mentions matter far more.
How long until AI starts recommending my business?
Assistants that search the web live can reflect site changes within weeks. Building enough third-party mentions to be recommended consistently usually takes three to six months.
